Testing Frugalware
Yesterday I tested Frugalware 1.0. It clearly is not for newbies. You can easily wipe your data, if you don't know what you are doing.
It got installed faster than Ubuntu/Fedora. After the installation it booted also very fast. But then I was greeted by an ugly XDM screen, even though I had selected all gnome related packages. I had to trace the startup: /etc/inittab -> /etc/rc.d/rc.4 -> /etc/sysconfig/desktop , to have a GDM screen.
After logging in things were not intuitive. GNOME's System->Administration menu was empty. The package manager didn't have an option to include DVD as the package source. I also had hard time figuring out the network related settings.
I know the site says: "designed for intermediate users (who are not afraid of text mode)".
But I thought this is not what I want. I would rather stick with a Debian / Fedora i686 clone.
That doesn't mean I will stop testing distros. My search for a i686 optimized linux distro has just started. I have already downloaded Crux-2.5 and Ccux-linux-0.9.9. I am going to try them both.
Currently my laptop and desktop both are running Ubuntu studio. I am happy with the features and readlly available applications but I want to fully utilize my machines hardware power [even though they are not very powerful machines ;)]
